Cuttack: Two persons were critically injured when criminals fired four rounds of bullets at them over suspected tender-related rivalry. Sidharth Shankar Nayak of Alisha Bazar and Kirti Sagar Swain suffered injuries on their legs and were admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital. Police said the goons had earlier abducted the duo, when they were going home after completing the tender-related work from the rural development office at Naya Bazar. While they shot Sidharth near an isolated place at SCB hospital, they attacked Kirti near the Birupa bridge at Jagatpur. Bhubaneswar: Orissa High Court granted interim relief from arrest to the parents and wife of Deepak Gupta, an accused in the Rs 1,800 crore Uliburu iron ore mines scam in Keonjhar. Gupta, who is on the run, had appealed that the FIRs against him and his family members be scrapped. Earlier, the vigilance court had declared the Guptas proclaimed offenders and asked them to surrender before the special judge (vigilance), Keonjhar, by September 12. Bhubaneswar: The body of a 23-year-old girl hanging from the ceiling was recovered from her rented house at Tankapani Road. Her roommate found the door locked from outside and called police. Tanuja Sahu, who was working in a two-wheeler company, appeared to have committed suicide. Bhubaneswar: Authorities of Ravenshaw University awarded an honorary doctorate on classical singer Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi at his residence as the renowned personality had not been able to make it to the varsity's sixth convocation in July due to poor health condition. Ravenshaw vice-chancellor B.C. Tripathy and registrar Padan Jena conferred the honour on him. Cuttack: The National Human Rights Commission, in its report on the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old visually challenged girl on the Puri-Konark marine drive in June, slammed the state government for sloppy probe and said it should handed over the case to a special team. The commission has also sought a report from the state government on the death of a seven-year-old girl at her school in Puri as an almirah in her classroom fell on her on July 29. Bhubaneswar: National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco), the Navratna PSU under the ministry of mines, signed a long-term fuel supply agreement with Mahanadi Coalfield Limited for supply of 47.16 lakh metric tonnes of coal to Nalco's captive power plant at Angul and 8.73 lakh metric tonnes for its steam-cum-power generation plant at Damanjodi. The agreement is valid till 2018.
