Meal workers’ demand

Bhubaneswar: Midday meal workers across the state on Thursday demanded a raise in remuneration and proper designation. The workers demanded that 'illegal disengagement' of the workers by the school management committees must be stopped. The committee, consisting of villagers and parents, is responsible for hiring of the cooks. 'However, many of these committees act out of bias to hire their own people. They bring allegations against the workers and sack them to hire candidates of their choice,' said Radha Raman Sarangi, president of the Odisha Midday Meal Workers’ Union.ore than 1.40 lakh persons work as cooks and helpers for the midday meal scheme under the school and mass education department.

Three dead

Sambalpur: Three Christmas revellers were killed when a truck ran over them at Sasan in the district. The mishap took place on Wednesday evening, when two persons were speaking to their friend along the state highway at Kankinda Square. The three residents of Sasan were apparently on an outing to celebrate the festival.

Arrest

Balasore: Sahadevkhunta police on Thursday raided a house at Orodbazar and seized 41gm of brown sugar. Two persons were arrested in this connection. They are identified as Gadadhar Hembram, 27, and his wife Mamjan Biwi, 24.

Rights order

hubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission has directed the Odisha State Pollution Control Board to initiate appropriate action against Hindalco Industries Limited for fluoride emission from its plant at Hirakud, causing damage to crops. The commission ordered the pollution control board to initiate action against the errant company within eight weeks while responding to a complaint filed by an activist.

Essar protest

aradip: Villagers stalled excavation for underground slurry pipeline of the Essar steel project here on Thursday afternoon. Residents of Nuagada village, who live close to the under-construction steel project site, protested against the company's lack of proper rehabilitation policies by stopping the excavation. They demanded employment opportunities for eligible people living on the peripheral areas of the steel project site.

More trains

hubaneswar: With an aim to provide comfortable journey to the commuters in winter rush season, East Coast Railway has decided to extend the services of Bhubaneswar-New Delhi and Bhubaneswar-Yesvantpur weekly special trains up to January 2014. The Bhubaneswar-New Delhi special train leaving Bhubaneswar on every Sunday will run up to January 26 from Bhubaneswar to New Delhi. In the return direction, New Delhi-Bhubaneswar weekly express leaving New Delhi on every Monday will run January 27 from New Delhi to Bhubaneswar, an East Coast Railway release said.
