Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader Umesh Swain on Friday resigned from the party and sent his resignation letter to All-India Congress Committee chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Sources said he was unhappy with the present leadership and the performance of the party in the recent civic elections.

Jetty project

Paradip: Deadlock over the establishment of an all-weather jetty to maintain waterway link between Paradip port and cooperative fertiliser major IFFCO has finally been resolved. Due to the inordinate delay in the jetty project getting under way, it has become a major impediment for hassle-free handling of fertiliser and its bi-products.

Gang busted

Bhubaneswar: City police on Friday busted an inter-state gang of snatchers and arrested four persons. The gang was involved in the loot of Rs 4.7 lakh from a businessman at the IDCO Tower and snatching of Rs 1.4 lakh from a labour contractor in Kharvela Nagar last December. In June last they had also looted Rs 2.4 lakh from a businessman near Master Canteen Square.

Girl assaulted

Bhubaneswar: A 17-year-old girl of a private college on Friday was allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend. The incident took place behind Indira Gandhi Park when both of them reached there to celebrate Valentine’s Day. However, they had an argument with the boy assaulting the girl with a blunt object. The youth escaped from the spot. The girl, with a finger injury, was rushed to a hospital.
