Bhubaneswar: Only four educational institutions from Odisha made it to the top 100 list of the country's best universities released by the Union ministry of human resources development on Tuesday.
No state government institution in the list.
The Siksha 'O' Anusandhan (SOA) University has slipped to 38th spot from 33rd last year. This is followed by National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, at 46. It held the 42nd spot last year.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) have been placed at 51st and 65th positions respectively. They were placed at 66th and 79th positions respectively last year. Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology and Utkal University, at 137 and 147, failed to make it to the top 100.
In the rank band of 150-200, four universities from the state - Fakir Mohan University, Sambalpur University, Xavier University and Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology - are present.
The India Rankings 2018 were done under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) that considered 3,954 institutes across nine parameters. Launched in 2015, the NIRF is a methodology adopted by the Centre to rank all institutions of higher education in India.
In the category of best 100 universities, the SOA and KIIT from Odisha have secured 24th and 42nd positions respectively. This year, Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology has made it to the 91st spot.
Among management institutes, KIIT has been ranked 30th and Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, 36th. SOA and KIMS were placed at 19th and 20th respectively among medical colleges.
NIT Rourkela and IIT Bhubaneswar found place in top 20 engineering colleges in the country. C.V. Raman College of Engineering in the state capital ranked at 89th place.
The government has expressed concern that no state run institute has figured in the top 100 in any category consecutively for three years.
Higher education minister Ananta Das said the list should serve as a wake-up call and steps were being taken to improve the academic quality at the state varsities.
