FILMS

I want to see more multiplexes in Bhubaneswar. I also hope that the viewership for Odia films increases. I would also like to see both viewers and film-makers becoming more open to experimental and realistic films
Susant Mani, film-maker

There should be more Odia films in 2016 and more new faces on the big screen. We would love to watch some originality as well Biplab Kumar Bhesra, film lover?

SPORTS

2016 is the year of Rio Olympics. I want all sportspersons from the state to qualify for their games in the event. I would also like to get more support to train myself for the Olympics
Dutee Chand, athlete

I wish Odia cricketers perform better in the New Year. New faces have been roped in for the state team. I’m pinning my hope on them. Also, I hope Dutee Chand, who fought a tough battle last year, qualifies for the Olympics. She deserves it Shirshendu Roy, sports enthusiast

TOURISM

We hope to attract more foreign tourists in 2016 as we are developing infrastructure through better accommodation facilities and eco-tourism, forest tourism and tribal tourism themes with support from forest department. Our focus in the New Year will also be on beach cleaning Gagan Dhal, tourism secretary

There are many places in the state that can be developed into model tourist destinations. I wish the government gives due recognition to the state’s tourism potentials and adopts a holistic approach for developing tourist circuits. Connectivity is a major issue. Beaches and waterfalls should be better connected Ananta Prasad, traveller

TRAFFIC

We plan to enforce traffic norms strictly. We also urge the residents to use public
transport to reduce the city’s pollution levels. We will also urge people to use bicycles more and to follow traffic norms Jatindra Kumar Panda, ACP (traffic), Bhubaneswar

I expect better civic sense and road safety awareness. I would like to see people obeying traffic rules. The authorities should also adopt a stricter approach to enforce traffic rules Rajdeep Beura, city resident

LAW & ORDER

We are looking forward to make the police more public friendly with frequent interfaces. We would initiate steps to prevent crime instead of detection of crimes. We also urge the public to co-operate with us to create a better policing system Satyabrata Bhoi, DCP, Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar’s crime rate is increasing at an alarming rate. The rise of sex rackets in beauty and massage parlours is scary. I hope the trend goes down. I also wish the city becomes safer for senior citizens
Amrita Parida, college student

AVIATION

The New Year has in store a lot of new initiatives. Air Odisha will start flights connecting Sambalpur, Rourkela, Jharsuguda and Jeypore via Bhubaneswar. There will be direct flights to Kuala Lumpur as well. We are also setting up a 5-MW green energy plant to make the airport self-sufficient regarding power supply
Sharad Kumar, director, city airport

Let’s hope the flights to towns, such as Sambalpur and Rourkela, will increase tourist inflow in these areas. If operated well, it can prove to be a boon for Odisha tourism Partha Sarathi Samal, tour operator

INFOTECH

With an investment of Rs 300 crore by Wipro, the state’s IT sector will grow in 2016. We also expect investment from 10 mid-size IT houses. A number of tech parks will be set up in the state, while an Infovalley will come up in Bhubaneswar,Pranab Prakash Das, IT minister

I wish 2016 brings in more opportunities at home for IT experts. Leading MNCs should set up their bases in the upcoming tech parks, so that we don’t need to go to other states in search of jobs
Santosh Pradhan, software engineer

SMART CITY

Next year, our focus will be on planning to make Bhubaneswar a smart city. We will focus especially on pan-city solutions regarding urban mobility and waste management. An area between Bapuji Nagar and Saheed Nagar, measuring around 1,000 acres, will be developed as the pilot project zone for this Ananta Narayan Jena, Bhubaneswar mayor

I hope we get better urban and civic facilities in Bhubaneswar this year as the city readies itself for the smart city tag. Also, urban and civic planning should come up keeping in mind long-term solutions for the city Subhashree Mishra, private sector employee
