Bhubaneswar: Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday ordered crime branch and judicial probe into the alleged gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Koraput district by four uniformed personnel on October 10.
The development followed after police had denied any sexual assault on the girl based on her medical examination reports.
"In accordance with the Commission of Enquiry Act, 1952, the probe will be conducted by a district judge, a press release of the chief minister's office stated.
The 14-year-old girl had alleged of being gagged and gang-raped on gunpoint by four uniformed personnel in the Lanjiguda forest while she was on her way to school from Kunduli. The girl had also alleged of being dumped in the forest after the crime.
The state police had taken the case under the Red Flag category. The crime branch till now was assisting the police in investigation. The Congress, which has been demanding action against the culprits, termed the judicial inquiry as a drama.
"The judicial inquiry will not yield any result, and the report will never reach the Assembly. The police are trying to suppress the matter, and so, we will continue with our protest. If necessary the victim will be brought to the Assembly during the winter session," said Congress chief whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati.
On Tuesday, the police claimed of contradictions in the statement of the victim and her medical reports. The police have also attributed the delay in revealing the medical examination reports because of not obtaining the final report by a team of doctors on time. According to the police, the final report was obtained on November 1.
The BJP also echoed the same and asked the chief minister to order a CBI probe into the incident. "If no rape has taken place, why will there be a judicial probe? Mystery still shrouds the entire incident. The government is trying to hush up the matter, so there should be a CBI inquiry," said party's senior leader Pratap Sarangi.
