Festival to honour legends

Bhubaneswar, July 30: Odissi artistes from across the country are set to charm art enthusiasts at dance festival Naman in the ADA Rangamandira, Bangalore, on August 2.

The festival, hosted by dance institute Nrityantar, completes six years this time.

It will feature performances by the disciples of three Odissi gharanas created by Guru Pankaj Charan Das, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and Guru Debaprasad Das.

"We bring together and showcase varied styles and schools of Odissi dance. The festival pays tributes to the Odissi gurus for their invaluable contributions towards the growth of the elegant art form," said host Madhulita Mohapatra, who is also an Odissi artiste.

"Suravi Odissi Dance Ensemble, under the patronage of Guru Pitambar Biswal, will showcase the beauty of Guru Debaprasad's style. Besides, Padma Shree Madhavi Mudgal, who also received the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi award among others, will perform at the event. The concluding day will have a must-see visual spectacle by the internationally acclaimed Srjan Odissi Dance Ensemble from, under the aegis of Guru Ratikant Mohapatra," said Madhulita.

The performances will be preceded by a panel discussion on the dance form with its gurus, artistes and enthusiasts.

In 2010, Odisha Dance Academy founder Guru Gangadhar Pradhan had inaugurated Naman. Since then, the festival has been appreciated by everyone and has featured some of the biggest names in the field such as Aruna Mohanty, Sangeeta Dash and Bijayini Satapathy.
