Bhubaneswar: Police are trying to nab the driver of the tractor that hit the car in which Nalco top boss Tapan Kumar Chand was travelling near Kaushalyaganga on the city outskirts on Saturday night.
The incident took place around 11.50pm when Chand and his wife were returning from Puri after attending a programme of the launch of two battery-operated vehicles at Puri railway station jointly by Nalco and East Coast Railway. Both of them had suffered injuries on their head and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital here. They have been stated to be out of danger.
Inspector in charge of Pipili police station, Sarat Chandra Sahu, said that they were trying to nab the driver of the tractor.
"We have already seized the tractor. Prima facie it seems that the tractor driver was responsible for the accident as the tractor was being driven in wrong direction," said Sahu.
Wrong side driving have emerged as a major concern for the police in the city and outskirts. As per official statistics, more than 20,000 people were penalised for driving on wrong side in Bhubaneswar in 2017.
"Wrong-side driving near Uttara on the city outskirts has led to several accidents in recent past. Most of the times, vehicles drive on the wrong side to cover less distance in the city and . Wrong-side driving possesses extreme danger for other vehicles," said a senior police officer.
Transport officials said that they would soon start a drive to curb wrong-side driving on the national highway connecting Bhubaneswar and Puri.
"We will penalise those driving on wrong side. We may also suspend the driving licences of repeat offenders," said a transport official of Puri district.
