Bhubaneswar, Oct. 11: An 18-year-old girl was today found dead in her hostel room at Madhusudan Nagar under Kharavela Nagar police station limits.

Police said the body of Satabdi Jena was found hanging from the shower pipe in her bathroom. A police officer said they had recovered a suicide note indicating that the girl was depressed for not having done well in examinations. Satabdi used to attend tuition classes for medical exams at a coaching centre at Madhusudan Nagar.

The police said that in her suicide note, Satabdi mentioned that she had not done well in the class examination held at the coaching centre and was unhappy about it. “Fearing that she might not be able to fulfil her parents’ dream of becoming a doctor, she committed suicide,” said a police officer.

They said a few hostel staff members also told them that the girl had hanged herself in the bathroom with her dupatta. Around 11am, when Satabdi’s roommates returned from the coaching centre, they found her dead.

However, the police theory did not go down well with either Satabdi’s relatives or friends.

Hostel-in-charge Ranjit said Satabdi might have slipped and injured herself in the bathroom. She was rushed to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead. Her body was sent to Capital Hospital for post-mortem.

Satabdi, who had done her schooling in Rourkela where her father, Pramod Jena, works with Rourkela Steel Plant, recently took admission in the coaching centre. Her father is supposed to reach Bhubaneswar tonight.

K. Laxman Rao, assistant general manager of the coaching centre, said he did not know how girl died. “She was staying in a private hostel that is attached to the coaching centre. I heard that she had fallen down in the bathroom. But, I do not know what exactly happened to her,” said Rao.

Ranjit said he was not in the hostel when the incident occurred. Inspector in charge of Kharvela Nagar police station Manoj Samant said they had registered a case of unnatural death. “We have seized a suicide note and the mobile phone of the girl. We are looking into all angles,” said Samant.
