Museum walk to debut with crafts

The development authority will start a guided museum walk, what would be conducted by the partner agency as part of the Ekamra Walks.

Bhubaneswar: The development authority will start a guided museum walk, what would be conducted by the partner agency as part of the Ekamra Walks.

The inaugural walk will be held at Odisha Crafts Museum, also known as Kala Bhoomi, the new facility to showcase handicrafts and handlooms at Talabania near Gandamuda, along the Pokhariput-Khandagiri road.

The first museum walk will be held between 3.30pm and 5pm on Saturday.

"The museum walk will be an important activity to create awareness among people about the history and culture of Odisha. The aim is to motivate tourists and the local people to visit rich cultural, archaeological and architectural sites of the city," said BDA vice-chairman Krishan Kumar.

An official said these experiences also have the capacity to sensitise people to preserve and conserve their own culture and heritage.

"The museum walk is also a mediums to initiate community-based efforts for conservation and preservation of heritage, art and crafts," said Kumar.

The city administration already conducts a heritage walks on Saturdays at Khandagiri-Udayagiri and on Sundays at Old Town. With the success of the two heritage walks, the authorities are also planning to start two more at Dhauli Peace Pagoda and Rajarani temple.

"The Odisha Crafts Museum celebrates the craftsmanship of our artisans by displaying their masterpieces to the world. Divided into eight separate sections, the museum showcases living traditions of a multitude of cultures present in Odisha," said an official of the tourism department.

Odisha Crafts Museum is the first of its kind to be established in the state. The primary objective of the museum is to promote crafts of the state. The establishment also includes an amphitheatre for cultural performances, a souvenir shop and workshop for live demonstrations of the artworks and a cafeteria.

"Bhubaneswar does have a great potential for tourism. The authorities are doing right things now to come up with such events for promotion of tourism," said Jayant Rath, a resident of Acharya Vihar.
