Cuttack, July 29: Two persons were arrested today in connection with the youth’s murder that had sparked tension at Dargha Bazar yesterday evening.

The accused were identified as Lokanath Mohapatra, 43, of Kathagada Sahi and Amarjit Singh alias Babuni of Keuta Sahi.

Lokanath had allegedly stabbed 27-year-old Ramesh Sahu of Kathagada Sahi following a brawl over a road mishap yesterday afternoon.

Deputy commissioner of police S. Praveen Kumar told reporters that the murder was the fall out of a sudden provocation. “Both the accused were arrested today and the knife used in the crime seized. We are also trying to ascertain whether there was any past enmity between the two,” said Kumar.

The deceased, Ramesh, used to run a fast food centre near Dargha Bazar and had been living in Cuttack with his family for the past 20 years.

Yesterday, Ramesh’s cart collided with Lokanath’s autorickshaw. Following this, there was an argument between Ramesh and Lokanath, who runs a flower shop near Kathagada Sahi.

Ramesh, however, had apologised to Lokanath and went to open his kiosk. Later, Amarjit, the other accused, called Ramesh at Dharmasala Chhak to resolve the issue. When Ramesh reached there, Lokanath allegedly stabbed him in his chest.

Following the incident, Ramesh was immediately rushed to City Hospital, and later, shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital where he died around 7.30pm.

Later, Ramesh’s friends and relatives went on the rampage and ransacked Lokanath’s autorickshaw. The agitators had also gheraoed Dargha Bazar police station in protest against the murder.

Both Lokanath and Amarjit were arrested under sections 302, 279, 323, 294, 120 (B) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and produced before court today.
