Balasore, May 10: A 15-year-old girl, who had given birth to a male child through Caesarean procedure in Balasore, died on Saturday at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

The girl was a resident of Nilgiri and the district child welfare committee had lodged her at a home in Sahadevkhunta.

The local childline centre had rescued her about three months ago.

Though the girl was pregnant, neither the childline nor the district child welfare committee had lodged any complaints with the police.

"The home had only informed us that one girl was been rescued," said inspector in-charge of Sahadevkhunta police station Paresh Rout.

The minor girl, who was a native of Jambani under Nilgiri police station limits, had lost her father, while her mother suffers from mental illness.

The pregnant girl was found roaming in the city when she was rescued by a local childline agency and sent to a home.

Priyaranjan Mohanty, a child welfare committee member, said the home or the child protection officer should have lodged a complaint with the police.

"We offered her extensive counselling but she never divulged the identity of the man whose child she was carrying. Her condition deteriorated yesterday and had to be shifted to the headquarters hospital. After a surgery, she delivered a male child. Her condition worsened and later she was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, where she passed away. Since there is no one to claim her body, it will be cremated in Cuttack," said Namita Das, who heads the home for distressed women.

The newborn fell sick after birth and is at the Bapuji Sewa Sadan.

A meeting would be held tomorrow to take a decision about the infant, a child welfare committee member said.

"I have already directed the committee to lodge a compliant with the police immediately," said Sanatan Mallick, the district collector.
