Cuttack, Jan. 20: One of the biggest business centres of the city, Manik Ghosh Bazar, is crying for space.

Local residents as well as traders of the bazaar are facing traffic problems in the area due to lack of space.

Besides, poor sanitation and drain overflow are other major issues of concern for the local residents and traders and customers there.

“Many people depend on the Manik Ghosh Bazar, which is one of biggest commercial centres of the city. But the market is creating problems for local residents and traders due to unhygienic atmosphere,” said local resident Sushil Sharma.

“The narrow roads of this area get blocked as the customers park their vehicles in front of shops. This also creates a lot of problems for the local residents and commuters,” said a Kedarnath Agarwal, a customer.

Apart from its commercial importance, the Manik Ghosh Bazar area, which falls under wards17 and 18 respectively, also holds religious significance. Prominent temples of the city like Sani temple and the Rani Sati temple are located here. “The roads and drains are almost equally levelled at the Manik Ghosh Bazar. The drains overflow due to non-removal of silt, causing a lot of problems for the pedestrians,” said local resident Anil Agarwal.

Similar is the condition of drains at Bakhrabad, Ganeshghat and Firigia Bazar areas. As there is no specified space for dumping garbage, waste can be seen thrown along the roadsides in all these areas.

Apart from this, inadequate drinking water supply is also a major problem for residents of Bakhrabad.

“Water supply is not adequate in our areas. The pipelines have not been cleaned for long. As a result, the flow of water through these pipes is being affected,” said Dipak Sethi, a resident of Bakhrabad area.

Local councillors of wards 17 and 18 Rakhi Agarwal and Ashok Sharma have, however, informed that steps are being taken for maintaining sanitation in the respective wards.

“The process of removing silt from drains has begun and problems would be solved once de-siltation is completed,” said councillor Ashok Sharma.

“Adequate steps are being taken for cleaning of roads and removal of garbage. De-siltation works would also begin in the ward soon. Steps will be taken to solve the problem of inadequate water supply,” said councillor Rakhi Agarwal.
