Paradip: The Odisha Human Rights Commission has directed the Nuapada police superintendent to conduct an inquiry and furnish a compliance report on the alleged killing of a man by a Maoist kangaroo court.

Responding to petition filed by Sangita Swain of Angul-based Human Rights Watch, the panel asked the Nuapada district police chief to submit a compliance report within four weeks. The matter was posted for further hearing on November 17.

On April 19, 2016, Maoists killed Gajapati Majhi of Dobaghat village in Boden police station limits of Nuapada following a kangaroo court judgment suspecting him of being a police informer. Though he was helping the police by providing ground-level feedback on the Maoists' movement, the law-enforcing agencies did not come to the rescue of deceased's family, the petition stated and sought Rs 20 lakh compensation for the bereaved family.

The local people, especially the tribals, are constantly being used by police forces to get first hand information on the Maoists.
