Jajpur: Police on Friday arrested a man on charges of killing his 39-year-old son with a wooden plank at Padana village in the district.

The police said the accused, identified as Bidyadhar Behera, attacked in retaliation after his son, Upendra, attacked him with a wooden plank in an inebriated state in their house on Thursday.

The police said Upendra, a tractor driver, came home drunk and started scolding his family members without any provocation on Thursday night.

He started misbehaving with his wife. Bidyadhar did not like his son ill-treating his daughter-in-law. When he confronted Upendra, he started arguing with his father. Then it turned violent, and in a fit of rage, Upendra attacked his father with a wooden plank. As a result, Bidyadhar suffered injuries on his head. In retaliation, Bidyadhar snatched the plank from his son and beat Upendra, killing him on the spot.

The family members raised an alarm and neighbours rushed to the spot. Later, they took Upendra to local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on admission.

Jajpur Sadar police seized the body and sent it to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.

Jajpur sub-divisional police officer Prasanta Kumar Mallha said Upendra used to come home drunk and pick up fight with his wife and family members without any provocation. "We have arrested the accused and produced him in court."
