Bhubaneswar: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) here seized 15 gold biscuits weighing 2.49kg from a passenger at Khurda Road railway station on Sunday.

The gold biscuits - valued at Rs 76 lakh - carried Myanmar markings.

DRI officials did not disclose the name of the passenger as that would hinder further probe. It is suspected that he was smuggling the gold into the country.

The officers intercepted the passenger, who was travelling from Guwahati to Chennai in a special train, around 8.50pm. "On examination, it was noticed that the passenger was carrying foreign marked gold biscuits in the pockets of inner vest and shoes. The smuggled gold has been seized under Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is in progress," said an official statement.

DRI officials said the arrested person has been involved in smuggling operation for the past five years. However, this is for the first time that he has landed in legal net.

"He claimed that his role was just confined to picking the consignments from another smuggler and delivering them to the traders. He pleaded ignorance about persons smuggling the metal from Myanmar," said a senior DRI official.

The agency also suspected the smuggler of supplying gold to traders in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Odisha.

"We are further interrogating him to find out details of other members of the racket and traders receiving the metal," added the official.
