Man arrested for dowry demand

Police here arrested a man for torturing his wife and attempting to kill her. The arrested man, Kanhu Behera, 30, who belongs to Arakhpal village in Talcher, was produced before the court on Friday.

Angul: Police here arrested a man for torturing his wife and attempting to kill her. The arrested man, Kanhu Behera, 30, who belongs to Arakhpal village in Talcher, was produced before the court on Friday.

The police acted on the complaint lodged by Behera's first wife Srabani Dal Behera.

According to police, Behera married Srabani in March 2016 and they have an 11-month-old son.

At the time of the marriage, Behera got many household products, including Rs 70,000, in cash as dowry.

After the marriage, he again demanded Rs 50,000 from Srabani's family.

He also threatened to kill her and marry another woman. He made two attempts to kill her by smothering her with a pillow and pouring kerosene on her. Both the times she managed to save her life. Behera recently got married to another woman named Rupa of Chhendipada area.

After his second marriage he started torturing his first wife even more.

On July 19, Srabani finally lodged a complaint at Talcher police station.

The inspector in-charge of Talcher police station Souvagya Swain had entrusted the charge of inquiry to officer Banani Behera who conducted the inquiry as an investigating officer. She said: "We arrested Behera on the charge of dowry torture and attempting to kill his wife. His first wife is now living with her parents and the second wife has also gone back to her family."
