Bhubaneswar/Paradip, Dec. 26: Managing director of Odisha Stevedores Limited Mahimananda Mishra, accused of orchestrating the murder of Mahendra Swain, the general manager of Seaways Shipping and Logistics Limited, was today brought to Odisha from Thailand.
Mishra, along with his associate Basant Kumar Bal, were detained in Bangkok after they managed to sneak out of the country this month.
Police sources said both Mishra and Bal were flown to Calcutta this evening from where they were brought to Bhubaneswar. Later, Mishra was brought to Capital Hospital for medical examination.
The police said both of them would shortly be produced in court and would be taken in remand for further investigation into the murder case. Swain was shot dead by four assailants on October 26 at the port town over business rivalry and the police have so far arrested nine persons, including Mishra and Congress leader Bapi Sarkhel.
The police had earlier hinted at Mishra's role in the murder of trade union leader Bichitranand Mallick in 1998 in Paradip, a kidnapping case in 1998, an attempt to murder case at Colliery police station in Talcher in 2011.
"Besides, Mishra will also be interrogated for other criminal cases pending against him. We will also interrogate him to find out when he left Odisha and landed in Nepal and Thailand," said a police official.
Paradip police today broughtanother accused, Sushant Sethy, a close aide of Mishra, for further investigation. Sethy was produced at a court in Kujang on Sunday after he was arrested from New Delhi airport last Friday. The police have accused Sethy of facilitating Mashra's safe escape and taking care of his logistics.
Mishra's arrest in Bangkok has elicited positive reaction from port users and stakeholders.
Utkal Stevedore Association president Prana Krushna Nayak said: "Mishra was running a parallel administration and unethical trade practices. It has sent a positive signal to those seeking to carry out trade and business in the port township."
Trade unionist and former MP Pravat Kumar Samantaray said that police should initiate stringent measures to end the reign of terror in Paradip.
The police said the situation in Paradip was peaceful and the supporters of Mishra were yet to react on his arrest.
