Bhubaneswar, Aug. 25: Student unrest has become a frequent affair on two college campuses with polls approaching at both institutes in October.

While the BJB Autonomous College has been witnessing student unrest for the past four days, Utkal University students on Tuesday locked horns outside the campus over a petty issue.

The BJB students today locked the college's main gate alleging police inaction in dealing with outsiders on the campus. "We have been demanding that police prevent entry of outsiders on the campus. But, nothing has been done so far," alleged an agitator. On Monday, the cops arrested Dipti Ranjan Sahoo, a student, for allegedly assaulting another student, Soubhagya Ranjan Sahu, an aspirant in the upcoming students' union polls. The incident has led to demonstrations by both groups.

However, the police said that despite their direction to install closed-circuit television cameras in various colleges to identify troublemakers, this hadn't been done. The police said many college campuses were vulnerable to the entry of outsiders because of the lack of private security guards. "Most of the campuses have multiple entry and exit gates, which is the reason behind easy access of outsiders. Besides, most of the college authorities fail to provide security at night in hostels," said a police official.

The police said the student groups with tenuous chances of winning the polls often created disturbances to get them cancelled.

The police termed Utkal University as the most vulnerable place. "On Tuesday, three groups of students tried to create disturbance outside the campus over a petty issue. We have managed to control the situation. But, we are keeping a close watch on the campus," said a police official.

Deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi said: "We will convene a meeting of the college authorities concerned to devise a plan to curb outsiders' entry. Action will be taken against those fomenting trouble on the campuses."
