Koraput: With Jeypore almost turning into a boiling pot in the sweltering heat, the district police administration has come up with a cool idea to ensure that the traffic cops posted in various locations of the town gets special care during the summer.

The police department on Thursday started providing lemonade to all the 13 traffic personnel posted across the town for controlling traffic.

"The traffic cops are deployed for four hours each in the morning and evening across the town. They tend to get dehydrated while being deployed on duty in the scorching heat. Hence, it was decided to provide them with a bottle of lemonade at intervals of one hour from 8am to 6pm every day for the next three months," said Koraput police superintendent Kanwar Vishal Singh.

"Subsequently, the initiative will be expanded to other urban areas of the district," he said.

Jeypore town police station inspector-in-charge Priya Ranjan Chottray said the motorcycle patrol team with bottles of lemon juice would reach the traffic cops posted at various junctions of the town.

The traffic cops said they were happy with the initiative since summer was especially stressful for them as they had to stand for long hours under the blistering sun battling vehicle fumes while managing heavy traffic.

"We are completely drained in the scorching heat, and a glass of lemonade at every one hour will be of immense help for us to hydrate our body," said a traffic cop.

Also, the district police are contemplating to provide sunglasses to the traffic cops in the town shortly as it will be helpful to keep the eyes cool.
