Cuttack, July 24: A few spells of shower have turned the potholed Khan Nagar Road near Biswanath Pandit Central Library here into a mini pool.
“I have a harrowing time wading through the waterlogged road,” said Saroj Das, a resident of Rajabagicha.
Das said the road remained waterlogged throughout the rainy season and the water-filled potholes posed a grave threat to the motorists.
The Khan Nagar Road had been in a bad shape for more than three years. Poor drainage system, particularly near the Khan Nagar Park, has compounded the miseries of the pedestrians as motorcyclists use the pavements to travel from one end of the road to the other.
“There is no space for the pedestrians to walk as the stretch from the library up to Kali temple remains waterlogged,” said Kartik Swain, another local resident.
Many accidents take place on this stretch after dark because of the non-functional streetlights.
As two big temples — Kali and Sai — are located here, local residents have stressed on urgent measures to repair the road.
Local councillor Pradipta Kishore Khuntia said: “A proposal has been mooted for carrying out repair works, which is expected to begin shortly at a cost of Rs 15 lakh.”
The condition of the road has deteriorated as many trucks had made a nearby vacant place as their transit point for loading and unloading goods.
Cuttack municipal commissioner Nihar Ranjan Mohapatra said: “We have instructed officials to carry out repair of major roads urgently. Subsequent repair would be done after the monsoon.”
