Cuttack, April 5: The Ravenshaw University seems to be heading for a new record as far as campus placements are concerned. Varsity authorities said around 450 students had already been recruited by top companies, with many more headhunters expected to visit the campus this year.

The recruiters — including BPOs such as Wipro, Genpact, Infosys and IBM — are offering attractive salary packages ranging from Rs 2-3 lakh per annum. Last year, a total of 540 students had been placed and the authorities are hopeful that last year’s placement figures will be surpassed.

“So far, 12 companies have conducted their recruitment tests and have offered jobs to 450 students,” said head of the placement cell at Ravenshaw, Partha Sarathi Mishra.

Mishra said Ravenshaw authorities were taking care to ensure that students of regular as well as professional courses in the university, who would graduate this year, landed jobs with good companies.

This year, the list of headhunters includes HSBC Bank, Jindal Steel and Infosys, which has already conducted three rounds of recruitment for general, technical and postgraduate students.

“Apart from BPOs, students want to work in banks and the corporate sector. The global recession has relatively cut down job prospects in European countries. Despite this, we are hopeful of things turning around so that we get even better offers, in terms of pay packages,” said Swati Shah, a student.

Other reputed companies, such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Visa Steel, HCL, Tech Mahindra, Sesa Goa and Reliance Group of Industries, have also recruited students in various placement drives in the past.

“We are hopeful that this year we will break all our previous records of placement since top BPOs, including Mahindra Satyam, Infosys and banks, will be coming here soon for the next session of recruitments,” Mishra said.

Although Ravenshaw has over 6,000 students, it had earlier failed to catch the attention of corporate giants. However, over the past two years, the situation seems to be changing for the better with employers willing to offer jobs even to students pursuing general courses. Those who have not yet landed jobs are waiting with their fingers crossed. “Many of my friends have already been placed with reputed multinationals and I am waiting for my turn,” said another student, Deepak Sahu.
