Balasore, July 18: The power supply to Balasore town and its periphery was reportedly snapped for nearly two hours last evening by a group of Nesco employees out of anger following the accidental death of a junior technician, Achutananada Behera, 30, due to electrocution.

Here, the urban consumers have already been struggling with frequent loadshedding and low-voltage problem.

“The power failure caused serious problem for the consumers. The death of the junior technician is an unfortunate incident. But, the disruptive act of some employees was something uncalled for. They should not have used power as weapon for their internal problems,” said Jayanta Das, a union leader.

The enraged employees demanded action against junior engineer Sthithapragyan Mohanty, lineman Subal Chandra Karan and helper Sushil Behera alleging that their fault had caused Behera’s death.

“Some of our employees (Nesco) cut off the power supply. As a result, the power supply to the entire town and its periphery was disrupted for nearly two hours, ” said executive engineer (rural) Sunil Kumar Pradhan.

“The power supply was restored following intervention by the chief executive officer of Nesco in presence of police. We would take appropriate action against the errant employees. We would also ascertain the cause of death of the junior technician,” Pradhan said.

Behera, a staff under the Phuladi section, was electrocuted while working on a 11KV line to rectify a snag near Kudia village under Sadar police station.

Following his death, the enraged villagers ransacked the section office at Phuladi and took the lineman and the helper on duty along with them. Later, the police rescued both of them.

“Acting on the compliant, we have registered a case against some unknown persons under Section 341, 323, 294, 353, 506 and 34 of the IPC, but no arrest has yet been made,” said inspector in-charge of Town police station Pravat Chandra Panigrahi.
