Balangir, Nov. 27: Roshanara Parveen of Balangir has been picked up by selectors as one of the probables for the women’s cricket world cup scheduled to be held in India next February.
The 20-year-old made her international cricket debut in Sri Lanka during the women’s T-20 cricket world cup in September with an impressive bowling performance.
If she gets to play, Roshanara will be only the second girl from Odisha after Madhuri Mehta to represent the country. Madhuri is also from Balangir.
Roshanara’s coach Arun Nayak said that he was very hopeful of her chances. “Since the tournament will be played in India, the tracks will spin a lot.
So, it is very likely that Roshanara will make it to the final 14. If she gets a chance to play, she will definitely perform well,” Nayak said.
“In her debut outing, she took part in the women’s T-20 world cup in Sri Lanka and took four wickets in two matches. Then, she was selected for the women’s Asia Cup in China where she also performed well. In the world cup, she will get more opportunity to perform as the matches will be of 50 overs. Since the earlier matches she played were T-20 ones, she had limited scope to show her potential,” he said, adding that Roshanara was a safe fielder as well.
The cricketer, who is now in her hometown, is practising hard everyday.
“Playing in the world cup is an honour. India’s grounds are known to be spinner-friendly and I will try to exploit the advantage if I am chosen to play,” said the right-arm off spinner, who looks up to New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori.
