The Central University of Orissa (CUO) organised an awareness campaign on health, sanitation and education in its adopted villages — Rajapalama, Nuaguda and Chakarliput — recently. The programme was initiated by the NSS team of the university where volunteers conducted a door-to-door campaign. Varsity vice-chancellor Sachidananda Mohanty said they had put in a continuous effort for social and economic transformation in the adopted villages. The NSS volunteers interacted with the members of the community and got a first-hand experience of the problems plaguing them. The campaign also aimed at inculcating a sense of responsibility among the students
Best centre
The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI), Bhubaneswar chapter, was adjudged for the Best Chapter Award under the category “A” in the eastern region for its “commendable performance in various fields” in 2017. The awards ceremony was held recently at the National Regional Councils’ and Chapters’ Meet in Calcutta. This is the 21st Best Chapter Award consequently received by the chapter for its performance in all spheres of activities. Chapter chairman Uttam Kumar Nayak and vice-chairman Damodar Mishra received the award.
HSC success
The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) has secured a 94 per cent pass rate in the HSC examinations conducted by the Board of Secondary Education. As many as 1,565 students from the school wing of the institute appeared at the examinations, which is also the highest number in the country from a single school for the test. More than 300 students secured 60 per cent or more marks, with girls outshining boys in general. More than 200 students of Juana, Didai, Kharia, Lodha, Langia Saura and Bonda tribal groups are among those who were successful.

Fakir Mohan University has got clearance for opening courses in as many as 10 departments from the 2018-19 academic year. The departments which have been accorded approval are history, archaeology, commerce, mathematics, botany, zoology, geography, education, geology and journalism and mass communication. This development has brought immense cheer among the students and teachers of the varsity as well as the general people of the district.
Skill conclave
Union petroleum and natural gas, skill development and entrepreneurship minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated a two-day Skill Conclave at Centurion University at Jatni recently. Pradhan said focussing on skill development programmes inherent to Odisha’s culture and identity would help in including more people of the state in the skilling eco-system and would help them hone their skills for gainful employment opportunities and entrepreneurship. He also said creating a pool of skilled manpower arising out of government’s current infrastructure development projects, especially in the aviation sector and the Saubhagya scheme, would help in amplifying skill development opportunities as per current demand.
Pollution message
Trytoon Academy in Bhubaneswar organised an inter-group competition at its campus here among the design students to show how the society was dealing with problems such as environment pollution and women’s struggles. Architects B.R. Naik and A.J. Pattnaik and Trytoon Academy chairman Swadesh Muduli attended the event as guests. The final winner group was given ONYX Champions Trophy 2018. The runners-up trophy was given to the Sapphire group. Students created portal shows on social problems they face and how to overcome the struggle to become successful in life. They made designs through apparel fashion style with cutting of newspapers and waste materials.

Jagruti College for Journalism and Mass Communication celebrated the World Press Freedom Day on its campus at Berhampur recently. A debate was held on the theme “Check the Power: Media, Justice and Rule of Law”. Principal Sarat Kumar Panda spoke on protection of journalists.
