Bhubaneswar, Sept. 28: A lavish collection of cotton and silk textiles is on display at the Cottonfab handloom exhibition that began in the capital recently.

Popular handloom fabrics from all over the country are available under one roof at the exhibition.

The venue for the handlooms sale, the Exhibition Ground, is already abuzz with buyers with the festive season just around the corner.

From saris or kurtis embellished with chikanwork of Lucknow, to the gorgeous Benarasi silks or the famous appliqué work, embroidery and embellishments on textiles of Uttar Pradesh, there is much on offer for women at the exhibition.

The shining threads in Chanderi saris and the classic look of Maheswari and Baag prints of handlooms of Madhya Pradesh are also on display here.

One can also find the famous Kantha, Baluchari and Dhakai jamdani handloom of Bengal, embroidered silk saris and stoles from Jammu and Kashmir, handlooms form Andhra Pradesh like Kalamkari, Mangalgiri and Pochampalli, Banjara and Bandhani prints of Gujarat, Bandhej and block print dresses of Rajasthan, Madurai and Kanjeevaram saris from Tamil Nadu.

Fabrics from Odisha such as the Sambalpuri and Bomkai saris are in demand at the exhibition.

“The season of festivals starts from Ganesh Puja and will continue till the New Year. Many occasions are coming where we can flaunt traditional handlooms and even gift some to our relatives. One is spoilt for choice at the exhibition since it offers an impressive range of handlooms,” said Sabita Patnaik, a home-maker.

“The response in Bhubaneswar was amazing and we made good business last year. We are hoping for good footfalls this year too,” said Javed Alam, secretary of the organising Samiti. Other than handlooms, handicrafts are also available in plenty at the exhibition. Decorative showpieces in glass and wood as well as wall hangings and furniture pieces in metal are there for sale. While the dress materials are priced at Rs 200 onwards, the craft items start at Rs 50.

Organised by the Awadhi Hathkargha, Hastshilp Evam Gramodyog Samiti from Lucknow, the exhibition will be on till October 8.
