Bhuabaneswar: The civic body will undertake a fresh beautification drive with street art and mural paintings in various parts of the city to showcase the state's history and heritage during the men's hockey world cup to be held here in November.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, which has undertaken similar drives in the past, however plans to adopt a different approach this time where it has invited interested agencies - including educational institutions and artists' groups - to come forward and join in the drive.

The civic body has identified 40km of road network for the work. It will conduct a survey of the road and identify places where the beautification work will be taken up after selecting the artists for the purpose.

"This time, we have targeted to paint large-scale wall painting, murals and street art in high-visibility landscapes, such as flyovers piers, underbellies and sidewalls, building facades, water tanks and walls. Selection of the agency will be done in a month and the work will be completed by September," said a civic official.

The civic body had initiated the wall painting drive first in 2008 and then again in 2017. However, at present, these paintings are not in good condition. Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena, however, claimed they did everything possible to maintain the artworks.
