Bhubaneswar, March 1: The state government has asked all district collectors to furnish detailed information of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities undertaken by various industrial houses, including central and state public sector undertakings, in their respective areas.
The state government has made the industries department as the nodal body to co-ordinate matters related to the CSR activities.
"We have asked the collectors to submit the CSR reports of various industries for 2014-15 and 2015-16," said industries department joint secretary M.K. Pattnaik.
Officials said that under Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, it was mandatory for companies either with a minimum net worth of Rs 500 crore or turnover of Rs 1,000 crore or net profit of Rs 5 crore, to spend at least 2 per cent of their profit on CSR activities. "According to the principle, every eligible company has to constitute a CSR committee of the board to carry out the activities," an official said.
Sources said the government was determined to raise the CSR issue as most of the industrial houses, particularly in the private sectors, were showing lack of interest in taking up projects under the CSR activities. The industrial houses in consultation with the local stakeholders, particularly with the district administration, are supposed to develop the peripheral areas of their industries.
In a related development, the government has asked all the industrial houses to extend support in implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission under their CSR activities. It wants the industrial houses to extend support in building toilets for the floating population such as people reaching bus stands, rail stations, markets and other places.
Reacting to this, chairman cum-managing director of Mahanadi Coalfileds Limited Anil Jha said: "We have actively taken part in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. We are building toilets under the CSR activities. If the state government asks us to adopt any municipality or corporation, we will certainly take up."
