Bhubaneswar, May 11: Applications for 48 state-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) will go online after the government decided to implement the student academic management system (Sams) for admission from the 2017-18 academic session.
The Odisha Computer Application Centre has already begun to take steps to develop the system that would be introduced from the next session in private-run ITIs.
Admission into polytechnics would also be moved online from the 2018-19 session, said a skill and development and technical education department official. The department recently hosted an orientation programme for officials.
The government has framed guidelines for the e-admission module. The online prospectus will have details about reservation of seats and other relevant information.
The admission will be held in two phases. In the first phase, online applications will be sought from May 15. The second phase, which would involve the admission process, will begin at a later date after the Class X results are announced. Selection lists would be published online in two phases, and the vacant seats filled up through spot selection at institution level.
"Exercises such as application, evaluation, intimation and admission would be held at institution level. Students would be allowed to seek as many trades as they want in the application," said a senior official of the Directorate of Technical Education and Training.
The e-admission process will continue till June 15.
"The current admission process for diploma engineering courses requires candidates to visit nodal centres several times at the expense of time and money. This complicated procedure is a major reason for low admissions," said educator Mona Patnaik.
Educational institutes had long urged the government for "simplified and student-friendly" e-counselling for admissions into various courses.
Calling the current process for admission into diploma institutes "extremely complicated", they had insisted on e-admission process, designed on the lines of the Sams portal used for admission into Plus Two and Plus Three.
