Bhubaneswar, Feb. 15: Goons burgled the house of a businessman in Laxmisagar area in the Odisha capital last night and stole gold ornaments worth more than Rs 7 lakh along with Rs 1 lakh cash.

The stolen items were gifts the family had received on the occasion of their son’s wedding last week.

Ratan Jain, a businessman dealing with trading of building materials in the city, lodged a complaint with the Laxmisagar police that some goons entered his house and stole the gift items, while he and his wife were sleeping on the ground floor of a four-storey building in Sarala Nagar on the National Highway 203.

The family stays in the house on rent.

“My son and daughter-in-law went to Puri after their marriage on February 8. When my wife and I woke up this morning we found our room was locked from the outside. We managed to get out of the room from the back door and found the gift items missing from the other room,” said Jain.

The businessman said he found the grill of a window in the dining hall broken. He informed the police later who inspected the spot with a forensic team and collected fingerprints.

Police said they were investigating into the matter. “We have constituted teams to arrest the goons,” said a senior police officer.
