Bhubaneswar: A video of a girl beating up an alleged molester with her slippers in a bus here on Wednesday has gone viral.
Sources said the bus was on its way to Nandankanan from Master Canteen Square when the incident took place. The video shows the girl shouting at the man and then hitting him with her slippers repeatedly. As she continues to beat the man, she asks him to get off the bus.
The man allegedly tried to touch her inappropriately, while pretending to make a phone call.
Initially, the passengers remained silent, but some of them later supported the girl and forced the man to get off the bus.
Though no complaint has been filed, commissionerate police has assured that the city bus, as well as the girl and the person who captured the video, will be traced. The police also assured to take appropriate action in the case.
Deputy commissioner of police Anup Sahoo said they were in possession of the viral video and were analysing it to trace the molester and the girl.
"We will find the girl and also the bus in which the incident happened," said Sahoo.
This is not the first time incident of a girl being molested in a moving bus here. In April last year, a similar case was reported when a bus conductor misbehaved with two girls in Cuttack.
Commuters alleged that the administration was not making enough efforts to ensure the safety of girls in buses.
"Buses should be fitted with closed circuit television cameras so that such incidents can be averted and the guilty tracked down easily," said Sanjukta Panda, a student of Rama Devi Women's University here.
Social worker Alok Kar said the government had in the past planned to install GPS and cameras in buses to trace their movements.
However, no attempts have been made to install those in buses.
"If the government is serious in ensuring the safety of women, they should take initiatives to bring an end to such incidents," said Kar.
