The Ganjam Bar Association has called for cease work of the District and Sessions Judge Court on Thursday in protest against alleged attack on an advocate by a police official on Tuesday.

The association, at its general body meeting, has condemned the attack on Hara Prasad Das, the advocate, at Buguda police station by inspector-in-charge Ramachandra Biswal and demanded the officer be arrested on the charge of attempt to murder.

“We have also requested all the bar associations in the district to observe cease work in their respective courts as a protest,” said association president Mohan Singari.

Singari led a team of the association members to Buguda and met Das. “We will decide our future course of action after discussion with members of the Buguda Bar Association,” said the association’s joint secretary Bapuji Patnaik.

“The association will submit a memorandum to the DIG (southern range) to fulfil its demand on Thursday and also appraise the Orissa High Court Bar Association about the incident,” said the Ganjam association’s secretary Prakash Chandra Dash.

Bhanjanagar sub-divisional police officer Utkal Keshari Das said three cases were registered with the police about the incident.

“The doctor of Buguda Community Health Centre and one lady constable have registered two separate complaints against the advocate, while Das has lodged another case against Biswal and other officers of the police station,” he said.
