Bhubaneswar, Aug. 22: Four persons, including a builder, were arrested from a hotel at Saheed Nagar today for kidnapping a 19-year-old woman and her mother.
The woman’s in-laws had lodged a police complaint.
Officials at Mahila police station said they received the complaint yesterday. The woman, who had married a marine engineer two months ago, had come to her parents’ house at Chandrashekharpur sometime back.
On August 17, she and her mother went to a Sai temple near a hotel at Jayadev Vihar. The accused allegedly kidnapped them from there.
Initially, the woman’s in-laws had attempted to find her. Unable to trace her, they found out that she had been kidnapped.
“Her husband’s brother lodged a complaint with Chandrasekharpur police. However, as the matter came under the jurisdiction of the Mahila police, they later lodged the complaint here,” said a police officer.
The police officer said the police raided the hotel at Saheed Nagar, where the kidnappers had confined the duo, and arrested the abductors.
The prime accused was identified as Chinmaya Das, a builder from Balianta on the city outskirts. The others were identified as Bijay Nayak, Gyan Das and Chitta Ranjan Sahu, who were working for Das at his Saheed Nagar office.
The police said that the accused had been booked under sections 363, 366, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
“We forwarded them to court after they had admitted during interrogation to kidnapping the woman and her mother,” said a police officer. They were sent to jail after a local court had rejected their bail pleas.
The police said that before her marriage, the kidnapped woman used to work for the builder. Das wanted to marry the girl.
As the woman’s family members had married her off to someone else, he hatched a plan to kidnap her.
Sources said that after the accused had kidnapped the duo, they were kept at separate places.
They even wanted to let the mother go. But she had insisted on meeting her daughter, so the kidnappers took her to the hotel where they had confined the woman.
