Bhubaneswar, Oct 6: The Odisha forest and environment department today ordered a probe into the incident of a man entering into a lion’s cage in the Nandankanan zoo here yesterday.
Principal chief conservator of forests J.D. Sharma has asked the zoo authorities to submit a report on the incident within a week.
Surya Narayan Das, a resident of Ganjam, had sustained serious injuries after he jumped into the lion enclosure of the park yesterday.
“The incident has exposed serious security breaches at the zoo. There is no proper mechanism of monitoring the activities of visitors inside the zoo. The zoo authorities must install closed-circuit television cameras to keep an eye on the animal enclosures. There had been a number of probes into such incidents in the past, but such incidents will keep occurring if the authorities don’t take stringent action against those responsible for such breaches in security,” said secretary of People for Animals, Odisha chapter, J.B. Dash.
Doctors at SCB Medical College and hospital, Cuttack, said that the condition of Das, who was referred there from a private hospital in Bhubaneswar yesterday evening, was still critical and he was likely to undergo a surgery.
“The patient was admitted yesterday with multiple injuries on his body. A team of doctors from the neurosurgery, orthopaedic and surgery departments are attending to him. However, his condition remains critical,” said SCB emergency officer B.N. Moharana.
Das said he took the extreme step because of family problems. “I had come to Nandankanan alone and jumped into the lion’s enclosure and asked the lion to either bless me or eat me up,” he said.
