Having successfully celebrated rath yatra, Utkal University again wore a festive atmosphere on the occasion of bahuda yatra. The students turned up at the Gundicha temple in VSS Nagar to escort the chariots of the holy Trinity back to the Jagannath temple on the varsity campus. Around 5,000 devotees, most of them relatives and friends of the students took part in the festival on July 7. The rituals of Hera Panchami were also observed. Sumptuous food items such as khechudi, dalma and khiri were distributed as mahaprasad. The atmosphere on the campus during the nine-day rath yatra festivities was tranquil and serene with light cultural programmes held during the evenings, which was an added attraction. Vice-chancellor Ashok Das performed the chhera pahara.

All that glitters

The faculty and students of Rama Devi College, Bhubaneswar, is making grand plans for the golden jubilee celebrations of the institute. Opened in 1964, the college will turn 50 in September and the college authorities are planning to invite President Pranab Mukherjee to the ceremony. However, there are many problems affecting the college that the students want to address before the preparations. Lack of proper drinking water facility, accident-prone area outside the campus and others are some grave matters for the girl students of the college, which they complained that authorities are not paying proper attention to.

Admission seekers

The Fakir Mohan Junior College, Balasore, is proving to be one of the most preferred choices for admission in the Plus Two streams. One of the oldest colleges of the state received surge of applications from the students across the state. The admission process began after declaration of first cut-off list recently .The cut-off marks in the current year have been slightly higher than the previous year. While for the science stream it is 83.50 per cent, for arts and commerce the cut-off percentage have been respectively 65.82 and 62. Lot of enthusiasm was observed among the admission seekers in getting admission in the prestigious college. Principal of the college G.C. Jena said that the selections were made under a transparent procedure and in a smooth way.

Honing inner talent

Kalakriti, the fine arts society of IIT-Bhubaneswar organised an annual art exhibition on the university campus where over 70 members of the club exhibited their paintings. Besides, a number of 3D handicrafts were also displayed. Established in 2008, the society hones the creativity of the students through activities such as painting, sketching, clay modelling and handicrafts among others. One of the highlights of the club is the Illumination Festival held every year during Diwali where an illumination is made using diyas.

Excitement galore

Around 200 students entered the gates of BJB Junior College in the city on July 7, for the first time to take part in the admission process. The mixed feeling of pride and excitement among the school pass outs was palpable. They seemed upbeat about making new friends and moving to a higher educational abode. While some students came for admissions with their parents, some came with their friends. The college administration put in place special arrangements to make the process of admission hassle-free for the students. Same excitement was witnessed in other junior colleges.

Beating cancer

A two-day intensive workshop providing hands-on training on Narrow Band Imaging, the first-of-its-kind in eastern India, was organised by the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, Bhubaneswar, on July 6-7. The workshop attracted medical students from various parts of the country, who were trained by Naresh Bhat, head of the department of gastroenterology at Columbia Asia Hospital, Bangalore. Manoj Sahu, associate professor in the department of gastroenterology at IMS and Sum Hospital was the course director. The advancement made by technology in recent times has made it possible to take on cancer and Narrow Band Imaging is a novel endoscopic procedure that can detect cancer at a very early stage.

Building IT ecosystem

Google Developers Group (GDG) Bhubaneswar hosted The Google I/O Extended in Bhubaneswar on July 5 at Srusti Academy of Management. About a 100 students from various colleges attended the event that covered topics such as design, development and making money out of web and mobile applications. The group attempts to bring together all the developers, enthusiast and Google lovers where they can meet, talk, share ideas and innovate. It focused on various topics such as Android, Drive, SEO, Cloud, App Script, GEO, App Engine, Ads API’s, Chrome, HTML5, which will help students, IT professionals and start ups companies to connect with each others and share their knowledge. “The initiative helps peoples to build a IT ecosystem,” said Subhasish Pattanaik, a representative of the group.

Tibetan connect

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between KIIT University and Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) of Tibet government in New Delhi on July 4. According to the agreement, the two organisations will work in the areas of mutual interest in education, heritage, social development, livelihood and skill building. They will undertake collaborative research, capacity building, pedagogy development, training and counselling and preservation and promotion of Tibetan culture. A. Samanta, founder, KIIT and KISS, and Sikyong Lobsang Sangay, on behalf of CTA, signed the MoU.
