Bhubaneswar, Dec. 19: Come January, traffic violators would not only be slapped with penalties but also be asked to watch a documentary film on traffic rules. The documentary would be screened at the proposed traffic park at AG Square.
The proposed park would have an auditorium with a seating capacity of 30. 'We have some accident footages and are also collecting accident visuals. We would show the visuals and would also aware traffic violators how to avoid mistakes,' said assistant commissioner of police (traffic), Jatindra Kumar Panda. He also said that the park would be functional by the second week of January.
The documentary would also educate commuters to deal with parking problem. The park will have also different kind of signage used on the roads. 'Most of the people are ignorant about the proper use of brakes. Our men would demonstrate how to apply breaks properly,' said Panda.
The park will have features such as traffic signals, roads marked with zebra crossings, miniature bus stops and rail crossings (level-crossings) to help children learn road discipline. Bhubaneswar had a traffic park near the AG Square in 1984, but it has been lying defunct since the last decade due to poor maintenance.
In the first phase, school-going children would be given priority to visit the park and later traffic violators would be invited.
Another such park is currently functioning from the driving test track in Chandrasekharpur. This park is spread in an area of one acre and is equipped with traffic signals, signboards and electronic simulators to help trainees understand traffic rules and regulations. There is a theory classroom, which can accommodate 50 people.
The park also has a beginner's 49 cc motorcycle that helps students in the age group of 9 to 12 years to understand the importance of safety riding through practical riding experience.
Statistics revealed that 625 accidents took place within Bhubaneswar city limits in 2012. The police also penalised as many as 87,817 violators in 2013 for flouting traffic norms while the number of violators by end of June this year stood at 56,978.
