Two days of competitions, gaming and festivity concluded at the Institute of Management and Information Science, Bhubaneswar, with the institute’s business festival — Management Odyssey — wrapping up with a heavy dose of creativity, B-plan and decision-making contests. Around 150 enthusiastic participants from 18 renowned B-Schools, colleges and institutes took part in the two-day event that concluded on January 19. The event was organised in association with The Telegraph. The college is located on a sprawling green campus on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

The festival offered a platform for intellectual stimulation, healthy competition and entertainment to students of reputed B-schools and academic institutes of the city.

The competitions held on day one included Big Bang Theory (Ad Mad Show), Corporate Warriors (Business Game), Dil Se (Solo Song), En–Pee-Dee (New Product Development) and Panache (Fashion Night).

Eminent personalities such as former state information commissioner Jagadananda and managing director of Maxtech Equipment and Consultants Private Limited Bipin Sarangi graced the event. Sarangi was felicitated as the most “promising entrepreneur” of Odisha during this event.

Second day of the business festival comprised of events such as Bounty Hunters (Treasure Hunt), Desafio (Case Solving), Nautanki Saala (Street Play), Guns and Glory (Counter Strike) and Tak Dhina Dhin (Group Dance) among others. The day came to an end with a splendid Rock Band Performance by Kaivalyaa of MTV Rock On fame.

Science and sensibility

Regional Science Congress was inaugurated at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, on January 27. More than 500 delegates from across country have taken part in the congress. Organised by the Indian Science Congress Association’s Bhubaneswar chapter and hosted by the Kalinga Institute of Social Science and KIIT University, the theme of this prestigious science meet was “Innovations in Science and Technology for Inclusive Development”.

At the inaugural session, eminent speakers focused on science and technology and development of rural sector. They opined that science could solve problems such as scarcity of drinking water and low agricultural production and laboratories were needed to be set up in primary schools to give impetus to science education. Eminent science speakers and scholars who took part in the meet delivered talks on several topics in different technical sessions.

Tech for better society

Professionals should join hands and take advantage of new technology to make the country competitive globally in all spheres, said eminent management expert K.C. Sahu on January 27.

Speaking as the chief guest on the foundation day of the Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering (Odisha chapter) at the SOA University, he said with the changing times and advent of new technology, a completely new situation had emerged in all areas and reiterated that though resources were limited, imagination and creativity were not.

Sexual harassment

Bhubaneswar-based Hi-Tech Group of Educational Institutions on January 29 formed a panel to address sexual harassment-related cases to ensure safe and secured workplaces in all its affiliated institutions. It also conducted an awareness workshop — Freedom for women: work freely and enjoy life — on Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital campus. “We have received feedback from more than 80 per cent of our female employees and students under our group of institutions and fortunately we have received no complaint, but we have gone a step ahead to form the panel,’’ said medical college director Sabitri Panigrahi, who is the head of the committee. The panel has advocate Chandana Panda as its legal advisor and several senior faculty members and officials as its members.

National-level workshop

Asian School of Business Management organised a national-level workshop — Science in Public Interest — on January 27 at the central auditorium of the institute at Chandaka. The workshop was graced by Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Rajendra Singh. The programme was inaugurated by Surendra Kumar, commissioner-cum-secretary, department of science and technology, government of Odisha.

Being human

A seminar on managing human behaviour was organised by the business administration department of the Balasore College of Engineering and Technology. R.P. Das, a senior professor of Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur who attended the seminar as the chief guest, stressed that poor human resource management often lead to conflicts among family members, friends, colleagues and even between states and countries.

College director Abhay Panda and other professors also deliberated on the topic.

Be a sport

The annual sports of KKS Women’s College, Balasore, was held last week. The two-day event saw competitions such as sprints, cycling, discus and javelin throw, long jump and high jump.

A cultural programme was held after the prize distribution ceremony. Deputy inspector general of police (eastern range) Aseet Panigrahi, who attended the event, said sports were important components for structuring of a healthy society.

The annual athletic meet of Rourkela Municipal College also took place recently.

Blood donation

A blood donation camp was organised at Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology at Burla on the occasion of birth anniversary of Veer Surendra Sai and Subhash Chandra Bose on January 23. Hundreds of students donated blood on the occasion. About 350 units of blood were collected at the camp. Former vice-chancellor of Berhampur University A.P. Padhee, who inaugurated the camp, appreciated the endeavours of the students. Vice-chancellor of VSSUT B.K. Nanda, who was also present at the camp, emphasised on the awareness of students regarding the blood donation and stressed on creating awareness about it in rural areas as well.
