Berhampur: Local residents thrashed and detained 10 excise officials while they were conducting a raid on an illegal liquor manufacturing unit at Masanibada village under Jarada police limits of Patrapur block in Ganjam district on Saturday.

The injured officials were detained inside the local anganwadi centre before later being rescued by police.

Berhampur excise superintendent Rajendra Batra said he, along with police staff members, went to the village after he received information about the attack on the team of excise officials. "We rescued the team members, who suffered minor injuries, and admitted them to Patrapur Community Health Centre for treatment," said Batra.

The excise superintendent said the villagers forced the excise officials to give in writing that they would not conduct any raid in the village in the future.
