An international poets’ meet was held at BJB College recently. A number of poets from across the state and students of the college read out their poems at the event. Mona Das, a poet from London who is known to the world for her novel The Untamed Heart, read out her poems and interacted with the students on various issues.
Review meeting
Members of youth group Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Odisha, recently organised their review-cum-planning meeting of their activities under the chairmanship of national vice-chairperson Sekhar Rao Parela. The members, including students from various schools and colleges across the state, focused on wider coverage in villages by reaching out to the grassroots-level youth organisations and problems pertaining to the areas.
The major programmes to be organised this year include plantation of three lakh saplings all over the state, organising the International Yoga Day, three youth conventions at Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur and Bramhapur to sensitise youths on various government schemes and programmes and their operational mechanism.
New tech centre
Union minister of human resources development Prakash Javadekar visited C.V. Raman College of Engineering in Bhubaneswar on April 16 to inaugurate the industrial robotics and tool room-cum-training centre of the college. The minister visited all the 13 centres of excellence that already existed on the campus. The minister encouraged the students to pursue technological advancement through automation and robotics to bring in rapid industrialisation. He said India needs engineers skilled in such technology.
Science seminar
A seminar on science, technology and scientific temper was hosted by the students' union of Ravenshaw University last week.
A number of scientists from across the state attended the event and discussed the recent scientific innovations in various fields.
Scholarship
The Bansidahr and Ila Panda Foundation, which is the CSR (corporate social responsibility) wing of IMFA (Indian Metals And Ferro Alloys Ltd), announced the 12th edition of Professor Ghanashyam Dash Scholarship for higher education recently.
Six meritorious students, pursuing professional degree courses in various disciplines, got the scholarship where the candidates will get 90 per cent of their total admission, tuition and hostel fees covering a maximum of Rs 1,00,000 per annum.
Trophy joy
A team of 20 members from Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER),Bhubaneswar, who attended the International Go-Kart Championship event in Lovely Professional University, Punjab, returned to Bhubaneswar with a trophy in their hands. The event consisted of a few dynamic tests and a main round named Endurance Race. The team finished as the first runners-up for the event. They said they had a great time at the event and felt proud to represent their college at an international competition.
Vedanga lecture
The Academy of Yoga and Oriental Studies organised a lecture on Vedanga Literature: An Overview in Bhubaneswar, which was delivered by Pratibha Manjari Ratha, former head of the Sanskrit department, Utkal University. In her speech, Ratha said Vedanga were the limbs of Vedas and were meant to protect it like a fort. Former IPS officer Arun Kumar Upadhyaya, who was the special guest on the occasion, discussed Jyotisha Vedanga.
Quiz winners
Teams from SAI International School and NIT Rourkela won the junior and senior segments of the second edition of Mettle Meet, the quiz competition organised annually by a local publishing house, on April 18. They got a cash prize of Rs1 lakh in their respective segments. Ravenshaw Junior College and AIIMS Bhubaneswar emerged the first runners-up while Saint Joseph and KIIT University were adjudged the second runners-up. They took home cheques Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. Quizmaster Venkatesh Srinivasan of Nexus Consulting tested the teams with tricky questions that covered a rainbow of subjects.
