EOW arrests 5 on fraud charges

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 27: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the crime branch arrested five persons today.

They include two employees of the Cuttack drainage division in connection with a bank loan fraud worth more than Rs 2 crore in 2010. The accused had fraudulently obtained loan from the Nayasarak branch of Allahabad Bank in Cuttack district in 2009.

The accused have been identified as Sarat Kumar Behera, Trilochan Rout, Dilip Kumar Nath along with Ananda Chandra Nayak and Purna Nayak - both employees of Cuttack Drainage Division. Earlier, the EOW had arrested as many as 11 persons, including the branch manger of the bank, Akhila Ranjan Das, and the establishment officer of the chief engineer's office (Cuttack drainage division), Rabindra Kumar Jena, for the fraud.

The EOW officials said Das and Jena had roped in two middlemen, identified as K. Srikant Patra and Biswanath Samantray, for giving loans to other persons and finally arranged as many as 85 borrowers, including six employees from the chief engineer's office (drainage division), Cuttack.

The EOW officials said they are trying to nab more people in the case.

Burglary

Unidentified goons allegedly looted valuables worth lakhs of rupees from the house of a bank employee at Chakeisihani in Mancheswar police limits last night. They decamped with gold ornaments worth Rs 1.5 lakh, Rs 10,000 in cash and a laptop. The cops have started an investigation.
