Bhubaneswar, April 21: An intrusion took Nandankanan zoo authorities by surprise here today.

After a tiger had intruded into zoo limits in 2013, a wild elephant barged into Nandankanan on Tuesday.

The wild elephant on Tuesday entered the Nandankanan zoo by breaking down its wall.

A zoo official said the elephant was seen roaming in the area lying behind the lion safari. Zoo authorities have started an operation to drive out the elephant.

In 2013, a six-year-old male tiger, which had been roaming around the zoo since March that year, had strayed into Nandankanan on April 29.

It, however, escaped from an exhibit enclosure of Nandankanan zoo by scaling an 18 feet iron fence on May 31. Later, on June 23 in the same the tiger had walked into the zoo limits after authorities had opened the emergency gate of 30-acre tiger safari to facilitate its entry.
