Balasore, April 22: Police today detained two persons for allegedly siphoning off Rs 9 lakh from the account of a businessman via netbanking.

The accused, identified as Ashok Roy, 32, of Bengal, had used a duplicate SIM card to commit the crime. However, the cops did not divulge the identity of another accused, stating that they were investigating his role.

Roy had posed himself as one Sumit Agrawala, 30, a businessman of Brajaraj Nagar, and lodged a police complaint at Jaleswar, saying that he had lost his mobile phone during his visit to Mumbai on April 13.

Producing documents pertaining to the station diary, he also managed to get another SIM card from the BSNL office and got the original number blocked.

Roy had submitted a fake identity proof to the police as well. Then, he transferred Rs 9 lakh to a different account by using the SIM card.

Agrawala, who was in Mumbai at that time, found his SIM blocked.

The police said that since Agrawala's number was registered with the e-banking facility and blocked by the BSNL because of the complaint, he did not receive any message about the transaction.

On his return from Mumbai, a BSNL official told Agrawala that his card had been blocked following a complaint. Agrawala then lodged a complaint with Brajaraj Nagar police. The BSNL officials blocked the duplicate SIM card issued to the imposter.

After this, when Roy went to the BSNL office to find out the reason as to why the duplicate SIM was blocked, the cops nabbed him.

"We arrested him after he came to the BSNL office to find out the reason behind blocking the SIM he was possessing," said Jaleswar sub-divisional police officer S.R. Malick.

Inspector in charge of Brajaraj Nagar police station Akash Sahu said: "Roy had hatched the conspiracy. They knew the businessman's movements. We suspect that there is a well-organised racket involved in it. We are also verifying the fact that how could the BSNL office at Jaleswar issue a new SIM card, and that too, for a different zone. The police's role in lodging the station diary is also being probed," he said.
