Bhubaneswar/Cuttack, Sept. 6: Architects from Dubai designed Trahi Achyuta Nagar, the vast empire of Surendra Mishra alias Sura baba, who was arrested on several charges, including possession of firearms and molestation, a crime branch source said today.
The township with more than 200 independent housing units, were mainly occupied by followers and devotees of the baba. It has a bank, post office, dispensary, shops and storerooms to supply essentials to up to 2,000 people for days together.
Located on 14.34 acres, the township also has the ashram of Mishra and a temple, the main shrine, which is about 150ft high. Crime branch sources said that Sura baba had roped in architects from Dubai and Mumbai to design the well planned township.
"The township was well planned with drainage facilities, speed breakers, facilities such as a bank, post office, dispensary and eateries," crime branch a source said.
The investigating agency has also found information regarding the presence of ashrams in nearly 10 states, including Bihar and Bengal, and another ashram in Nepal. The officials will also inquire into the financial transactions and links of the units as it is suspected that Mishra collected crores of rupees from devotees across the state. The money was immediately transferred to the Achyutananda Ashram Trust.
Sleuths are now verifying around 300 land documents that were seized during a search at the Trahi Achyut Ashram on Saturday. Crime branch officials said the entire process of scrutinising the records and assessing its value would take another three to four days.
Revenue officials will also be engaged for the purpose
Crime branch officials today continued with the interrogation of Mishra on the second day of his extended three-day remand.
Sources said Mishra and his two sons were grilled in the presence of a chartered accountant to ascertain his income as well as investments made in the last 15 years. The sleuths had also found a diary from the ashram containing details and contact numbers of five persons said to be close associates of the baba. They managed his empire. The role of these associates is now being looked into seriously by the investigating agency.<>
