Unique idea to promote reading habit

For books

World Book Day was celebrated at DPS Kalinga where a plethora of activities including "Bookmark making", "Being your favourite story book character" and "Authors and poets" - were hosted. It was done with the aim to inculcate the habit of reading books among the youngsters. An acronym was coined for an activity called "drop everything and read" as DEAR. It was a fun-filled day of reading activities for the children.

Earth day

Earth Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at DAV Public School at National Thermal Power Corporation plant at Kaniha in an attempt to propagate the individual responsibility in safeguarding the mother earth. A cycle rally was held that witnessed participation from students, staff and parents. On the occasion, NTPC Kaniha executive director Ram Kuber and Tanvi Sangam president Deepti Kuber planted saplings and spoke on the importance of conserving the earth. A cultural programme was also held.

Love of fish

The ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in collaboration with the state fisheries department, Ganjam zone, conducted an awareness meet for tribal students called "Fish as Healthy Food" at Badapalli Ashram School in the district on April 20. More than 350 students from seven nearby schools took part in a meet with their teachers. Awareness was created among the students through direct discussions with the scientists and technical officers of ICAR-CIFA, and fisheries officers on the nutritional value of fish.

Golden jubilee

The Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI), Berhampur unit, celebrated its golden jubilee recently. Students of St Xavier's High School, Minakshi Nagar and Ambapua, Aryan Public School, Aska and Vedbyash Residential College took part in several cultural events on the occasion. Many literary, cultural and sports competitions were also held and the winners were felicitated. A souvenir was released in which the aims and objectives of the YHAI have been reflected.

Navy boss

Vice-Admiral Karambir Singh, flag officer commanding-in-chief, Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam, visited the Sainik School, Bhubaneswar, recently. On Singh's arrival, Sainik School principal Kanchan Mukherjee extended him a warm welcome and the senior cadets of the school displayed a spectacular guard of honour. The foundation stone of a new stadium was laid by school captain Nitish Kumar in the presence of Singh. Project construction will commence shortly under the supervision of the state public works department. Singh inaugurated a 45-seat school bus sponsored by the state government.

Annual event

Sandipani Gurukul Ashram, a CBSE English medium school in Baripada, held its annual event recently. Mayurbhanj district education officer Madhusudan Chakra was the chief guest while journalist Kavi Vishnu Satpathy was the chief speaker. Students Abhijit Giri and Laxmipriya Hembram were presented with citations and cash rewards and principal A.K. Ghosh read out the annual report.

Special day

Students of DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, observed Hans Raj Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the doyen of DAV movement by taking part in a series of activities on the school premises on Thursday.
