Baripada, Dec. 18: A team of doctors today collected DNA samples of a rape victim, the accused and their alleged child following persuasion from Mayurbhanj police.

Sankar Murmu, a student of ITI-Baisinga and resident of Dangar village, had allegedly developed intimacy with the girl, who hails from Bhanupur, when she was going to computer classes in a local institute. Three months ago, the victim delivered a girl child. Murmu disowned the victim and the child. .

This prompted the girl’s father to lodge a police complaint. He also alleged that the accused had got his daughter pregnant earlier, too, and forced her to go for an abortion.

After preliminary investigation, the police arrested Murmu. Sub-divisional police officer Gopinath Manipatra said: “After the Nirbhaya case in Delhi, it has now become mandatory on part of the police to carry out the DNA test if no other evidence for rape is found. This is an old case and the DNA report would help the prosecution in preparing a case, apart from determining the paternity.”

Now, the DNA test report would confirm the relation among the three. The accused and victim are both minors, said the police. The samples were collected at the Betnoti community health centre in presence of the magistrate. “The samples would be sent to Institute of Life Sciences in Bhubaneswar for the test,” said inspector in charge of Baisinga police station Niranjan Das.

Alok Khilar, in charge of the community health centre, said: “The blood samples were collected according to police requisition and sent for the test to the state centre.”
