Cycling mission for change

A 30-year-old is braving physical handicaps to spread the message of environment protection, road safety and organ donation.

Balasore: A 30-year-old is braving physical handicaps to spread the message of environment protection, road safety and organ donation.

Pradeep Kumar Sen, a resident of Ramlakhan Bazar in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, lost a leg after falling off a train in 2013. Instead of letting it bog him down, he has been cycling since November to for a cause. Sen reached Odisha on Sunday, halting at Balasore on his way to Baripada, after covering eight states and 8,300km, ioncluding Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh.

"I am spreading messages on road safety, cleanliness and environment protection. Swachh Bharat is swasth Bharat (clean India is healthy India)," he said.

Outlining his plan for the rest of the journey, Sen said: "I have a target of covering 15,000km on my bicycle. I have already donated my eyes and plan to denote other organs. I am also a member of Lions Club and have received sponsorships, including the bicycle from reputable companies, for my mission."

"I undertook the mission to prove that disability is not an impediment. I received encouragement from my father, a real estate broker, and family other members."

The commerce graduate with specialisation in foreign trade has a variety of interests, including dance and choreography, photography, art, paining, cooking. "I have taken part in Dance Indore Dance. I can cook a variety of foods," he said with a laugh.

Sen now plans to reach Delhi after cycling through Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. He wants to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi in the second week of June before winding up his mission.

"He is a braveheart on a noble mission. He needs commendation and appreciation," said Balsore MP R.K. Jena .
