Police on Sunday served notices on five engineering students of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in connection with a campus clash between two groups of students.

BTech and law students of KIIT University had hurled stones at each other and clashed with planks and sticks on the campus in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.

Twelve students were injured in the clash that sparked off after lewd comments were passed at a law student on Friday.

The police said two cases had been registered on the basis of two separate complaints lodged by both the groups.

“The situation has been brought under control and we have intensified patrolling on the campus to prevent any further untoward incident. We are also examining the video footage of the incident to identify those involved in the clash,” said deputy commissioner of police Anup Kumar Sahoo.

The incident came to light when students, who had recorded the violence incident on their phones, had uploaded the video clips on social media.

The institute authorities said on Sunday that disciplinary action would be initiated against the guilty.

As a precautionary measure, the authorities have vacated the two affected hostels. The university has not been closed sine die and classes are being conducted as usual.

The police have also cautioned the institute authorities to take matters involving students seriously.

“The incident took place on Friday and the matter was amicably settled. The institute authorities did not seek our help when the clash broke out. They sought our help only after the situation went out of control,” said a police officer.

Two arrested

Two persons were arrested here on Sunday during a joint drive by a special squad and Laxmisagar police while smuggling arms from Munger in Bihar.

The duo identified as Ajit Mohapatra, 32, alias Bapi of Mangala Sahi in Khurda and Sujit Das, 19, of Hajipur in Bihar, were nabbed at Budha Nagar in Laxmisagar police limits while waiting for a client to deliver a weapon. One pistol and one live ammunition were seized from their possession. They have been booked under the Arms Act, said a source.
