Bhubaneswar: Police have served notices to around 1,000 vehicles for jumping red signals at traffic intersections here during the last one week. The violations were spotted by closed circuit cameras installed at traffic junctions.

The police said that they had slapped notices on 3,465 violators on Monday, which included around 1,000 for jumping red signal.

A police official said that the violators would have to pay a penalty within 7-15 days of receiving the notice. If they don't pay the penalty, prosecution proceedings would follow.

Earlier cops used to control traffic manually, but the introduction of automated traffic lighting system three months ago had left it on the commuters to obey rules at the junctions.

Assistant commissioner of police Anup Kanungo urged commuters not to jump signals. "We have asked our men to note down registration number of vehicles violating signals," Kanungo said.

Deaths due to road accidents have witnessed a 47 per cent increase in the last five years forcing the cops to sit up.

"Most of the time youths speed away defying the signal and this can lead to mishaps. Public must obey signals, while the police should also be strict with violators," said former member of National Road Safety Council, Government of India, Syed Maqbool Ali.
