Bhubaneswar: The inspector-in-charge and two lady sub-inspectors have been shifted from Nayapalli police station to the commissionerate headquarters following allegation of assault by two sisters.
The two sisters accused the police personnel at Nayapalli police station, including inspector in charge Sangram Pattnaik, of beating them up.
This comes a day after the inspector in charge of Nimapara police station in Puri district Mrutyunjay Swain was suspended for allegedly assaulting a 75-year-old woman.
The sisters - residents of Behera Sahi under Nayapalli police limits, claimed the police had dragged both of them to the police station on May 6 after receiving information on a group clash over land dispute. "The police forcefully took us to the police station and confined us to a room for around two hours. They also beat us up with plastic pipes. The inspector in charge of the police station was also among the group that assaulted us," said one of the women. The matter came to light on Saturday after the sisters - both in their twenties -took social media to upload photographs of their injuries.
The photographs showed severe injury marks on their shoulders and thighs. The women's wing of the BJP on Saturday staged a demonstration in front of Nayapalli police station demanding action against the policemen.
Pattnaik denied the allegations and claimed they women had received the injuries during the group clash. "Our personnel, including a lady sub-inspector, were manhandled when they reached the spot. Both the women assaulted our men and tore the uniforms. So, we brought them to the police station and arrested them for assaulting the police," claimed Pattnaik, adding that the father of the two women had lodged a complaint against the other party for assaulting his daughters.
Deputy commissioner of police Anup Kumar Sahoo said the additional DCP of human rights protection cell has been instructed to inquire into the allegations and submit a report at the earliest.
"The original case was related to civil dispute and police had to intervene in the matter. Both the parties had lodged complaints against each other," said Sahoo.
