
Bhubaneswar, June 5: The 26-year-old son of a senior police official was today arrested on the charge of killing a drugstore owner at Jatni on June 1.
Police said Biswajit Mohapatra had killed Sudhanshu Mishra, 51, because the later had opposed the proximity of the accused to his niece.
The police said that the accused had been trying to get close to Mishra's niece for the past one year.
"The accused had gone to the girl's house with a proposal to marry her. But Mishra opposed the proposal because he was unemployed," said a police officer.
Mohapatra got furious when the girl got engaged to a software engineer on May 31.
"The accused had threatened the girl with dire consequences over telephone after her engagement. Out of frustration, he assaulted Mishra with a machete at the medicine shop the day after the engagement," said the official, adding that Mohapatra's father was a deputy superintendent with Odisha police.
Later, a profusely bleeding Mishra was rushed to the nearest hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
"After committing the crime, the accused fled from the spot on his motorcycle to Keonjhar. He had been staying with a relative when he was arrested today. He was produced before court today," said inspector in charge of Jatni police station Sujit Kumar Pradhan.
Honey trap
Police today arrested five women who had been robbing people after offering to have sex with them.
The police said the women had been arrested for robbing a person of Rs 5,000 and his mobile phone last night.
The gang members have been identified as Barsha Rani Das, 27, Minati Behera, 30, Jyoti Behera, 20, Sanghamitra Biswal, 20, and Nirupama Moharana, 30.
The cops said the gang had been operating in and around Bhubaneswar railway station for the past few months.
